Montana women's tennis singles player comes up big at ITA Regionals

The Montana Grizzly women's tennis team continues to compete in the ITA Mountain Regionals in Las Vegas on Friday.

Rain delayed play on Wednesday and Thursday at the UNLV campus, but Friday cleared up enough to complete two singles rounds.

Haley Driver won both her singles matches to earn a spot in the sweet 16 round.

"She played very intelligently and is working on elements of her game that should lead to successes now and in the near future," said Ascher. "I'm very pleased at how we are competing and I like the rate of growth that we are cultivating as a team."

Ashley Mackey beat Melissa Cecil from Air Force Academy in the round of 64. She then lost to the fourth-seed from UNLV. Sasha Carter was defeated in the round of 64 to Emma Verberne of University of Nevada-Reno.

"The experience to play seeded players in these national level tournaments is priceless," said head coach Steve Ascher. "I'm excited for the opportunities that Ashley and Sasha had today to gain experience that the upper level of this tournament."

On Saturday, two rounds of main draw doubles and two rounds of main singles will be played in addition to back-draw matches.
