The University of Montana women's tennis team dropped its non-conference match to New Mexico Saturday, 5-2, in Bozeman, Mont.
The Grizzlies, who dropped to 2-2 in match play, saw victories with senior Lauren Gibson and sophomore Ashley Mackey. The Lobos move to 2-0 winning the doubles point as well as winning four of six singles matches.
"The team showed a lot of determination today," said coach Steve Ascher. "We had a lot of players battle back in some tough matches.
"It just wasn't our day."
One of Montana's victories came by way of Mackey's three-set victory over Kristin Eggleston, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3. Mackey has made strong comebacks in her last two matches to seal victories. In her win over Sophie Vickers of Idaho, Jan. 29, Mackey overcame a 6-2 opening set loss to win the next two 7-5 and 6-1. Mackey lost a close opener to Eggleston but bounced back in two dominant sets winning handily. Mackey is 3-1 in match play.
Gibson, Montana's other winner on the day, moves to 2-0 in match play with her win over Michaela Oldani in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5. Gibson's only other match this spring was a straight set victory over Miranda Duggan of Lewis-Clark State.
Big Sky player of the week, Laurence Pelchat, was rested due to a medical precaution which shifted the Grizzly lineup. That shift was evident in the doubles matchups where Montana lost 2-1.
Due to Pelchat's absence, Davidson partnered with her last year's partner Lauren Gibson. The pair lost the No. 2 match against Bezdickova and Alyssa Caffey 8-5. Davidson and Pelchat hold a No. 3 ranking in the Mountain region. Bezdickova and Caffey lost to Davidson and Pelchat in the ITA regionals in Ocotber.
Mackey and freshman Precious Gbadamosi accomplished the only Grizzly doubles win with a victory over Eggleston and Laura Richardson 8-4.
"We will use this loss as a learning platform, and will use this experience to challenge ourselves to work smarter earlier on in matches," continued Ascher. "We are excited for the challenges that lie ahead in Portland"
The Grizzlies will face Portland, Portland State and Seattle Feb. 10, 11 and 12 in Portland, Ore.
