Montana senior Maddey Frey was named to the Capital One Academic All-District 7 women's soccer team Thursday. Frey is the first Grizzly to earn academic all-district honors since Misty Hall in 1999.

Frey, of Kalispell, has a 3.86 GPA as a mathematics major and is a three-time Academic All-Big Sky Conference selection.

"Maddey is just what we want out of our players. We want them to strive to be the best they can be not only on the field but also in the classroom," third-year coach Mark Plakorus said.

Frey, who had never played defender before joining Montana, spent her first three-plus seasons with the Grizzlies playing outside back. As a junior she earned honorable-mention All-Big Sky Conference honors after Montana matched a program record with 12 shutouts in 21 matches.

One of Montana's four team captains in 2013, Frey began her senior year at the same position but moved up to the midfield when the team suffered a rash of injuries. She responded with four goals in six matches and shares the team's goal-scoring lead with senior India Watne with four.

Her first career score was the insurance goal in Montana's 2-0 home win over Nevada on Sept. 20. Frey scored the opening goal in the Grizzlies' 1-1 tie at Idaho State on Sept. 28 and added two second-half goals in Montana's 3-0 victory at North Dakota on Oct. 11.

Frey also has an assist this season and has four goals and three assists for her career.

"Maddey is a very good athlete who picks things up quickly, so I knew a change of position would not be a struggle for her," Plakorus added.

"She was in the same situation when she came into college having never played defender before. It's a testament to her desire to be on the field."

Frey and Montana play their final match of the season Friday night at UC Riverside.
