Chambers leads UM past NDSU

Sophomore Meghan Chambers put on a show as she notched two goals and assisted on the other goal as The University of Montana women's soccer team defeated North Dakota State, 3-0, Friday, Sept. 29, in the Montana Nike Cup.

Chambers opened the scoring with her first goal in the 41st minute. The Lake Oswego, Ore., native beat one defender before dribbling through another defender's legs and tucking her low shot just inside the far post.

Chambers, who tied with senior Lindsay Winans for a game-high four shots, assisted on junior Mahlleace Tomsin's goal in the 78th minute. Tomsin redirected a low cross by Chambers.

Chambers wrapped up the scoring less than one minute later as she once again beat two NDSU defenders before scoring far post.

"Meghan has been getting better every game. Today she played with the confidence that she always had," said coach Neil Sedgwick.

The two teams combined for 35 fouls, UM-16, NDSU-19, while the Griz held a strong advantage in shots, 19-6, including 14 in the second half.

"The first goal is very critical. It changes the way that the team that is behind plays their game. It causes them to take chances and sometimes those chances count against them," said Sedgwick.

Freshman Grace Harris posted her second straight shutout and third this season, making one save for the Grizzlies.

Monica Morgan allowed three goals and made three saves for NDSU. Lorraine Thompson and Kelsey Hohol each had two shots for the Bison.

The Grizzlies improve to 5-5-0 and will face South Dakota State, Sunday, Oct. 1, at 1:30 p.m. in the Montana Nike Cup.

North Dakota State, who defeated the Grizzlies last year by an identical score of 3-0, falls to 4-5-1. The Bison will face Northern Colorado, Sunday, Oct. 1, at 10:30 a.m.
