Craig named co-Offensive Player of the Week

Sept. 4, 2012

Montana senior forward Erin Craig was named the Big Sky Conference co-Offensive Player of the Week Tuesday by the league office. Craig shared this week's honor with Idaho State senior Anna Pingree, a former Griz soccer player.

Craig, who was recognized three times her junior season, was named offensive player of the week for the fourth time in her career, the most for a Montana player since the Big Sky Conference started honoring players of the week in 2000.

The Great Falls native scored twice last weekend to lead Montana to a pair of victories at Boise State's Bronco Invitational, 1-0 over BSU on Friday and 3-2 in double overtime over Idaho on Sunday.

Craig scored the match's lone goal Friday, netting the game-winner in the 65th minute - the third game-winner of her career - and her goal in the 75th minute in Sunday's match evened the score at 2-2 and allowed for Mackenzie Akins' game-winner in the 107th minute.

Craig took a team-high 12 shots on the weekend, putting six on goal, while playing 140 minutes.

"Erin had a very, very good weekend for us," UM coach Mark Plakorus said. "She fought like crazy and put in the effort to be in the right place at the right time.

"The opportunities she created made her extremely dangerous the whole weekend."

Craig's two goals give her 16 for her career and move her into a tie for ninth with Amy Wronski (1999-2001) on the Montana career list.

She scored one as a freshman, two as a sophomore and totaled a Big Sky-leading 10 as a junior to earn first-team all-conference honors. Her three goals this season are tied with Pingree for second in the league.

"We've been asking Erin to do a lot more her senior year," Plakorus added. "Not so much on the field but off it with her leadership and the example she sets for our younger players. She's been doing those things fantastically."

Montana (3-3-0) will take its two-match winning streak on the road this weekend to UNLV's Nike Invitational in Las Vegas. The Grizzlies will face Indiana State (3-2-0) Friday at 5:30 p.m. (MT) and the host Running Rebels (3-2-1) Sunday at 2 p.m. (MT).
