Northern Colorado scored twice in the opening 11 minutes and added two more goals in the second half to defeat Montana 4-0 Sunday afternoon in a Big Sky Conference women's soccer match at Jackson Stadium in Greeley, Colo.
The Bears (7-4-3, 3-1-1 BSC) won their third straight match and remained perfect at home this season after posting their seventh shutout of the year.
The Grizzlies (4-7-4, 1-4-1 BSC), who outshot UNC 13-12, were shut out for the fourth time in six Big Sky matches. Montana is tied for seventh in the league standings with two weekends of Big Sky matches remaining.
Northern Colorado opened the scoring in the seventh minute when Chandler Guetz headed in Rebecca Lancia's corner kick for what would turn out to be the game-winner.
The Bears added a second goal in the 11th minute and took a 2-0 lead to the locker room despite getting outshot 7-5 in the first half.
Guetz made it 3-0 when she scored off another Lancia corner kick in the 64th minute, and UNC finished off the scoring with yet another goal off a corner kick in the 82nd minute.
Northern Colorado scored goals on three of its five corner kicks in the match.
"I'm disappointed by how we came out today," UM coach Mark Plakorus said. "The first few minutes we were fine, but after we gave up that early goal, we struggled. I expected us to compete a lot better than this."
Freshman goalkeeper Kailey Norman, of Highlands Ranch, Colo., started in goal for the third straight match for the Grizzlies. She made a season-high five saves. Freshman Aspen Peifer, from Colorado Springs, Colo., took a team-high three shots while playing 42 minutes off the bench.
Montana will wrap up its Big Sky Conference schedule with three home matches over the next two weekends. The Grizzlies will host Eastern Washington (3-12-0, 1-5-0 BSC) Friday at 3 p.m. at South Campus Stadium in their only match of the coming week.
