Senior Ashli Helstrom and freshman Tara Green each shot one-over-par to help Montana (310-306--616) shave four strokes off its first round total as the Grizzlies wrapped up day two of the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic in Chandler, Ariz., Tuesday.
Helstrom and Green both improved on their first round scores by one stroke. The pair has shot identical scores of 74-73--147 and both move into a tie for fifth place overall in the tournament after two rounds.
Despite shooting 306 as a team the Grizzlies dropped in the tournament standings and sit in 18th place heading into the event's third and final round.
"We had a better day today," said coach Emily Milberger. "I'm proud of the fight we had.
"Ashli and Tara had another good day. Each had some struggles, but they really worked hard to keep their rounds going."
Helstrom has definitely made good use of her experience at this tournament. Helstrom knows this course well as both this event and the Big Sky Conference Championships are played at the Ocotillo Golf Course each year. Helstrom has competed on this course twice a year since she was a freshman, and her best performances every year have been at Ocotillo during the Big Sky Conference Championships.
"Having so many rounds on the course, I have hit the ball pretty much everywhere," said Helstrom. "I know that I don't have to hit it perfectly to get up and down and still make par."
Junior Olivia Weber (81-77--158) improved on her first round score of 81 to shoot 77 while senior Lauren Howell (81-86--167) struggled on the course ending the day at 14-over. Sophomore Natalie Beard (84-83--167) ended her second round at 11-over.
Colorado State (292-292--584) took over the top spot after two rounds shooting a consistent four-over-par both days. Iowa dropped to second place after its tournament best 289 score in round one with a second-round effort of 301.
Colorado State's Brianna Espinoza is the tournaments individual leader with a two-round score of (68-68)136.
Montana tees off Wednesday in the third and final round starting at 7:30 a.m. Live stats will be provided via GolfStat.com and results as well as a full-tournament recap will be posted on GoGriz.com at the conclusion of the third round.
