Wing named Big Sky Tennis Player of the Week
University of Montana sophomore Stuart Wing was named the Big Sky Conference Tennis Player of the Week the league office announced Tuesday.
Wing finished 2-0 in singles and doubles play as the Griz split a pair of dual matches at Eastern Washington's indoor tennis courts in Cheney, Wash. Montana lost 4-3 to Gonzaga before recording a 4-3 conference win over Eastern Washington.
Against Gonzaga, Wing won 7-6, 6-3 over Cooper Fratt at the No. 4 singles position. Wing, playing with junior Varun Giri, also managed UM's only doubles victory. The Griz duo won 9-8 over GU's Cooper/Womack at the No. 2 position.
Wing, from Kempton Park, South Africa, continued his strong play in the very important league matchup with Eastern Washington. The 5-10 sophomore won a three-set tie-breaker, 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (3), over EWU's Kevin Erickson at singles No. 4. Wing/Giri also won in doubles action recording an 8-4 victory over Cohoe/Gregg.
"Stuart put on a real gritty performance last week versus Gonzaga and Eastern Washington," Griz tennis coach Kris Nord said. "He really showed me a lot of character by winning in singles play on EWU's indoor tennis surface, which is not his best surface. We're looking forward to moving him outdoors where he can utilize his side to side movement to play his best tennis."
Montana is currently 2-3 overall, 1-0 in Big Sky Conference play. The Griz travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., this weekend with duals against Northern Colorado, Air Force and Wisconsin-Green Bay.
