ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA CANDIDATE

MONTANA: Derek adds quality depth on the D-end and is also a solid special teams player. He is Montana's third leading returning tackler.

2013: He played in all 13 games and was the Grizzlies' eighth leading (tied) tackler with 41 stops. He was named to the Co-SIDA's all-district academic team. Twice named to the Big Sky Conference's academic squad.

2012: He played in all 11 games and was 17th on the team with 20 tackles.

2011: He was a redshirt at Montana. He enrolled at UM in the winter semester of 2011.

HIGH SCHOOL: He lettered in football (three), wrestling (three), and track (four) at Whitefish High School. He was an all-state pick on defense as a senior. His senior year he was voted defensive MVP and served as a team captain.. He was tabbed an all-conference first team selection at linebacker and at fullback as a junior. His prep football coach was Pat Dryden. He served as team captain in wrestling as a junior, and was tabbed "Hardest Worker" that season. He had a 4.0 GPA and was a member of the national honor society and was class valedictorian.

CAREER HIGHS: He had seven tackles against Eastern Washington last season. He blocked a punt against Appalachian State in the season opener last year. He had a sack at Northern Colorado in 2012.

PERSONAL: His major is chemistry, and he hopes to attend medical school and become a physician. His parents are Bill and Cyndee Carter of Whitefish. Birth date: April 15, 1992.
