THE GAME: The University of Montana Grizzlies open their 2012-13 season on the road, playing the Colorado State Rams in Fort Collins, Colo., on Friday, Nov. 9, in CSU's Moby Arena (8,745). Moby Arena Press Row Phone: 970-491-3981.

RADIO: UM's flagship station is KGVO Radio (1290 AM). Mick Holien, "The Voice of the Grizzlies," will call the play-by-play for his 20th season in a row this season, while Greg Sundberg provides color commentary at home games.

Grizzlies fall to Rams 64-58 in season opener
The Colorado State Rams survived a late comeback bid by the Montana Grizzlies and won 64-58 in the season opener for both teams at Moby Arena in Fort Collins, Colo.

SERIES/LAST YEAR: The Rams lead the series 19-13 and are 14-3 in Fort Collins and 5-10 in Missoula. The teams also opened against each other last season, host 90CSU winning 64-58. UM was led by G-F Kareem Jamar's 12 points, while guard Will Cherry and forward Art Steward scored 11 points each. CSU was led by guard Wes Eiekmeier's 21 points, while forward Pierce Hornung had 12 rebounds.

THREE STARTERS BACK: The Griz have three starters back this season: Cherry, Jamar, and senior forward Mathias Ward. Cherry and Jamar were first team all-league selections last season, although Cherry, who led the Griz in scoring (15.8 ppg) a year ago, is out of action because of a foot injury. Jamar was UM's second leading scorer (10.9 ppg), while Ward was third (10.9 ppg).

GRIZ LAST SEASON: The Griz, ranked 14th in the's Mid-Major poll, beat Weber State 85-66 to win the Big Sky's post-season tournament title and advance to the NCAA tournament (a 73-49 loss to Wisconsin). Montana's 25 wins a year ago were the third most in school history.

At MONTANA 86, LCSC WARRIORS 68: Jamar and Ward combined for 46 points as the Grizzlies defeated the Lewis-Clark State Warriors 86-68 in an exhibition game on Nov. 1. Jamar scored 19 points in the second half to help the Grizzlies cruise to the victory. He was 10-of-17 from the field and made 4-of-7 three-pointers. Ward tallied 16 points in the first half, and made 7-of-9 shots from the field.

TINKLE FOURTH ON WINS LIST: Seventh-year Montana head coach Wayne Tinkle has 116 career wins -- the fourth most in school history. Coach Tinkle is 3-3 in season openers. (UM's top four winningest coaches listed on add 2-2-2 of the weekly release).
