He most recently worked at Hawaii, where he was the director of basketball operations for the 2011-12 season. Prior to joining the staff at Hawaii, Rupp was the head coach at Louisiana Tech for four season (2007-11). In his time at Tech, Rupp took the program to new heights, including a 24-11 record in 2009-10 when the Bulldogs advanced to the second round of the CollegeInsider.com tournament. Rupp was named the 2009-10 Louisiana Association of Basketball Coaches and Louisiana Sports Writers Association coach of the year after leading Tech to its best record since 1985. Prior to coaching at Louisiana Tech, Rupp had stints at Alabama-Birmingham, Indiana and Utah. He worked two seasons at Indiana (2004-06) under former coach Mike Davis. The Hoosiers advanced to the NIT in 2005. From 2000-2004 Rupp coached under Rick Majerus at Utah. The Utes amassed a four-year record of 70-26, went to three NCAA tournaments and one NIT and twice advanced to the Mountain West Conference championship game. Rupp recruited Andrew Bogut to Utah. Bogut would become the national player of the year and the top pick in the 2005 NBA draft. Rupp joined Majerus's staff after a successful 24-year high school coaching career. He served as an assistant coach (1986-90) and head coach (1990-2000) at Salt Lake City's East High School, leading the Leopards to four region titles and two state title game appearances. He was named the 1999 coach of the year by the Utah High School Activities Association. Rupp was the head boys' basketball coach at Unitah (1978-79) and Murray (1979-82) high schools. A 1972 graduate of Cyprus High School, where he was an all-state performer in football and basketball, Rupp played two years at Utah State before transferring to Southern Utah. He was named the Thunderbirds' team MVP and earned all-district and all-conference honors as a senior in 1977. Rupp earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from Southern Utah in 1977. He and his wife, Lori, have five daughters (Alie, Lindsey, Shelby, Billie and Randie) and six grandchildren. |
