Defending Big Sky champions return three starters from a 25-7 team
MONTANA: Nick continues to improve and is vying for playing time at the three position. He played in 12 games and lettered. In 2011-12 he was a walk-on and a redshirt, and was given a scholarship by Coach Tinkle after the season was over.
HIGH SCHOOL: He lettered three times in basketball, twice in golf, and once in tennis at Columbia Falls High School. He was first team all-state as a senior, when he averaged 18.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game, and shot 56% from the field and 75% from the line. His senior team was state champs, going 22-1 record. His high school hoops coach was Cary Finberg. He was chosen team MVP and team captain as a senior. His junior team won the division title and finished third in the state with a 21-3 ledger, while his sophomore squad went 16-7 and won divisionals and placed second in the state tourney.
PERSONAL: He is a health and human performance major. His mom is Debbie Emerson of Columbia Falls. Birth date: Oct. 12, 1992.
QUOTING HEAD COACH WAYNE TINKLE ON NICK: "Nick's been a nice surprise this spring. Last year we thought he was a little content with his role, and we challenged him to step up his intensity and hunger for the game, and he's really had a nice fall so far.
"Right now he's kind of a back-up at the three spot and a little at the four. He's rebounded the ball well. He's really taken care of his body, and put the effort in with nutrition and strength and conditioning. We will see as the year goes on where he will be. So far, so good."
