The Montana women's and men's cross country teams were both named USTFCCCA All-Academic the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced recently. It was the fourth time in the last five years both programs have been recognized.
The Grizzlies were one of 146 Division I cross country programs to have both of their teams honored.
To be eligible for nomination, teams must have competed at the most recent NCAA regional championship and have a minimum team cumulative GPA of 3.0 through the fall semester.
Among the 217 NCAA Division I women's teams named All-Academic, only nine had a better GPAs than Montana's 3.69, which was also the highest in the department. The Grizzlies posted a term GPA of 3.53 during the fall semester.
Montana had seven athletes on its 2013 fall roster. All seven competed during the season and all seven earned Academic All-Big Sky Conference honors last month: juniors Keli Dennehy, Heather Fraley, Allie Parks and Carly Wilczynski and freshmen Reagan Colyer, Sarah Hastings and Lauryn Wate.
Montana finished sixth at the Big Sky championships last fall.
Providence was named the women's USTFCCCA Scholar Team. The Friars won the NCAA championship and have a 3.38 cumulative GPA.
The Montana men's team has a 3.21 cumulative GPA and was one of 160 men's teams to be recognized by the USTFCCCA.
The Grizzlies finished ninth at the Big Sky championships last fall and had six athletes earn Academic All-Big Sky Conference honors last month: junior Ben Williamson, sophomores Matt Barker, Reid Longley and Mark Messmer and freshmen Micah Drew and Adam Wollant.
Northern Arizona was named the men's USTFCCCA Scholar Team. The Lumberjacks finished runner-up at the NCAA championships and have a 3.34 team GPA.
Montana was one of five Big Sky Conference teams to have both their women's and men's programs recognized as USTFCCCA All-Academic. Idaho State, North Dakota, Northern Arizona and Weber State also pulled off the double.
