
Montana falls to Long Beach, San Diego

The Montana softball team dropped games to Long Beach State and San Diego on Saturday on the second day of the San Diego Classic in Southern California.

The Grizzlies (0-19) lost 6-3 to Long Beach in a game Montana led entering the bottom of the sixth, then got shut out by the Toreros for the second straight day 11-0.

Allie Brock, who returned to active status on Friday after missing a weekend of games, pitched Montana to the brink of its first win of the season against Long Beach.
Â
After allowing two first-inning runs, Brock limited LBSU to just two hits over the next four innings.
Â
The Grizzlies pulled within 2-1 on a sacrifice fly by Riley Stockton in the top of the third, then took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth on a two-run home run by Kelly Sweyer.

Elise Ontiveros singled through the left side with one out, her second hit of the game, then Sweyer connected for her second home run of the season to left on a 2-2 pitch.

Holding a 3-2 lead entering the bottom of the sixth, Brock walked the leadoff batter, then the Grizzlies committed an error on an attempted sacrifice, putting two on with nobody out.

A successful sacrifice put runners at second and third, a non-putout fielder's choice loaded the bases with one out for Jacquelyn Bickar, who hit a grand slam down the left-field line, making it 6-3.

Montana went down in order in the top of the seventh. Brock took the loss while throwing her third complete game of the season.

One night after putting up 12 runs on Montana, San Diego was at it again on Saturday night. The Toreros scored one in the second, three in the third, three in the fourth and four in the fifth.

San Diego had 14 hits in 25 at-bats against three Montana pitchers. Sweyer had two of the Grizzlies' four hits.

Montana will face 12-6 San Diego State on USD's home field on Sunday at 11 a.m. (MT).
