Hawaii no-hits Montana

Hawaii freshman Key-annah Campbell-Pua threw a no-hitter and faced the minimum 21 batters as the Rainbow Wahine defeated Montana 7-0 on Sunday morning in the Grizzlies' final game of the UNLV Desert Classic in Las Vegas.

It was the sixth no-hitter thrown against Montana, which went 0-5 in Las Vegas to drop to 0-10 overall, the second no-hitter in a game that went seven innings.

Campbell-Pua allowed two bases runners, one by error, one by passed ball on a strikeout. Both were put out on double plays by Montana's next batter.

Julie Phelps reached base in the bottom of the 4th when she led off the inning reaching second on an error by Hawaii's left fielder. Two pitches later she was doubled off second when Elise Ontiveros lined out and Phelps was picked off, second to shortstop.

Kynzie Mohl reached base in the bottom of the 6th on a passed ball on a strikeout. She, too, was part of a double play, third to second to first.

Campbell-Pua, who struck out six, needed just 82 pitches to make it through seven innings and improve to 3-1.

Hawaii scored six of its seven runs via the long ball. The Rainbow Wahine hit a solo home run in the 1st, a three-run home run in the 3rd and a two-run home run in the 7th.

Hawaii also scored in the 2nd on an RBI single through the left side.

Grace Haegele threw the first 2 1/3 innings, allowing five runs. She was relieved for the final 4 2/3 innings by Evelyn O'Brien, who allowed four hits and two earned runs.

Montana will play games against South Dakota, Grand Canyon and Utah State next weekend at the Purple Classic in Phoenix.
